Bushnell 2.5x42 Nightvisions Binocular with Built in IR

Real Night Vision (within reason)4

Bought these with moderately high expectations and fully understanding the limitations of first generation night vision technology I can say I'm satisfied with the performance. They work ALMOST as good as the military grade night vision gear I used in the 1980's. If you do a bit of research you'll see that 2nd generation night vision optics are significantly more expensive. If you're rich go for 3rd gen equip. Lesson here is Gen 1 stuff is affordable but comes up a little short from turning night into daytime.

I recently went camping in the boonies and took these along for the following review:

Performance on starlight alone is not acceptable (at least with my pair) as I could not resolve much of anything without the I.R. illuminator turned on (more on that in a sec) but these binocs do work pretty good when there is a moon overhead. I could see further than I needed to except for anything that might have been in shadows. Shadows keep their secrets well unless the illuminator is turned on. No moon tonight? Flip on the I.R. illuminator and see pretty much everything in the dark quite good up to say 60-70 yards. The I.R. lamp (illuminator) has a sort of "spotlight effect" in that everything in the center is really bright kind of like when you use a flashlight on the wall you will have a really brightly lit spot and then area outside of that spot is somewhat visible but much less so.

Each eye is focused independently of each other and when properly focused is fairly sharp. I did notice that focus is easily knocked out of whack by the lens cover(s) so each time I pulled off the covers to have a look I needed to fine tune them again. I wish they could be locked into place. There is also a macro focus but I did not investigate that. I was more concerned about what there was to see outside of the camps perimeter.

For those who don't know everything has a very green appearance and that's just the way it is. Newer generation night vision may be less green but since it's so expensive I haven't investigated it. And you can use these during the daytime as well providing the front lens caps are in place. They have daytime filters allowing for daytime use but I much prefer my regular (and higher magnification) binoculars for daytime usage. In a pinch though these will do both. Hope this helps some folks out since reviews on these are hard to come by.

Oakley Men's Half Jacket Iridium SunglassesJet Black Frame/G30 Lensone size

Amazing5

These sunglasses fit so comfortably that you won't feel like you're wearing sunglasses at all. The lenses provide for crisp clear vision and absolute UV protection. I love these sunglasses and honestly I think they really do take the place of 10 or so cheap pairs of $10 Wal-Mart sunglasses so don't let the price detour you.More detail ...

Yukon Advanced Optics 3x42 Night Vision Waterproof Monocular

Excellent Night Scope5

This scope is one of the best Gen 1 units on the market. At 36 lines/mm it has just about the best resolution. Most other units only have 24 lines/mm. The illuminator is bright (almost too bright) uniform and has a crisp edge. It could be a bit larger however so that it would fill the field of view.

Note that if you remove the eyepiece or lens (to put on the riflescope eyepiece or change the magnification) you will break the seal and the unit will no longer be waterproof.

Don't bother with the IR flashlight. Its output is actually less than the built-in illuminator and it is far from uniform.

Vasque Men's Breeze GTX Hiking BootTaupe/Orange11.5 M US

dam fine boots dam fine5

I never write reviews ever... I always felt like I did not want to waiste my time. However I realized after spending hours and days of serching for the perfect hiking boots how important reviews are to help one find the right boot.

I live in the rocky mountains of montana and needed a top level boot. I have serched and tryed a ton of brands and I must say... vasque Rules!

I use to own the original zephers before vasque re did them and messed them up. I needed something to replace my vasque zephers I hiked all over Iceland and montana in snow mountains and volcanic rock with my 1st pair and they were amazing. So I figured... why not come back to vasque for a new pair of boots since almost every other brand i have tryed besides merrill have felt crappy to me.

I just got the breeze gtx in the mail and have not hiked in them yet but have worn them around were I live. They feel even better than my 1st pair of zephers. They do not need to be broken in at all and they have a bit of a strech effect to them that felt like a custom fit around my foot the boot felt to form fit around my feet and are not tight or stiff what so ever.

One big thing you must know about vasque before you buy them is this... Always order 1 size higher then what you normally wear. vasque is not true to foot size. I wear size 14 and with both pairs of vasques I have had to get size 15.More detail ...

Brunton SOLO 7.5 Amp/Hr Lithium Polymer Storage Device

Works sometimes2

I have had 3 of these. When it is working it is very effective. The first one I had arrived in non-working order. It would not charge properly (the red light never came on) and it only recharged things until it's initial charge ran out. So I sent it back to brunton and they very kindly sent me another. That one is still working. I also bought another one while I was waiting for the replacement since I was running out of time before traveling. That one worked for exactly one charge-discharge cycle and has not worked since. None of the lights come on any more. I love the functionality of this product it is a good size I hate the fragility. 2 out of 3 bad ones is not a good average.

An update: The 3rd one died too. After a little less than 1 months usage. Get the APC Mobile Power Pack instead.More detail ...

Best Rolling Luggage I've Ever Owned!5

Packed my entire family of 4 into this bag for a week. Easy to pack organize and unpack. The external pockets are great for quick grab items like toiletry kits. I even wheeled this down a gravel path with no problem. Dragged it up and down several flights of stairs (made a lot of noise!) with no damage or problems. There is an internal wet/dry pocket which is great for separating dirty or wet clothes from the rest of your stuff.

Overall REALLY like this bag.More detail ...

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Gobi 84 Liter Roll Top Backpack (Orange)

Great durable dry bag5

I've owned one of these (60L size) for years. I've removed the suspension long ago as I haven't done any trips with long portages. The suspension is modular so you can use just the portions of it that you need. All of it attaches to the bag with velcro. My bag may be slightly faded but it's still watertight and looks like it will stay that way for years. I'd recommend it highly.More detail ...

Oberon 13 Man Family Camping Dome Tent

Many pros and a couple cons4

The large space in the center is great. We actually had it rain on our first trip out and this tent worked perfectly. The kids having their own section was also very nice. The pods though can feel a bit small (at least to my wife). Additionally having the center floor separate is great for clean up but allows bugs in (though not into the sleeping pods)which was a bit annoying. Set up is fairly easy once you do it a couple times and the color coded poles are great.More detail ...

Utah 10 Man Family Camping Dome Tent

Top Quality Very Comfortable5

We've only used this tent once so far but it has definitely lived up to our expectations. The only thing I will change is the tent pegs that came with it as they are the usual flimsy little metal pegs and I don't think they will hold a tent this big in the wind.

My partner is 6' 2" and he can stand up inside this tent quite easily. It can easily hold two double mattresses in the center section plus a mattress in each of the little rooms. It took us about 40 minutes to set it up the first time. It only has one mesh panel that can't be closed and it is not very large and is above the main entry door so it shouldn't let much dust in - we will be camping in the Nevada desert so this is an issue for us. It even has skylights. EDIT: Now that I've used it in the desert - it did hold up to the wind quite well once we attached the guy lines - BUT the mesh windows in the small rooms can't be completely sealed the flap that covers them does not attach at the bottom - so they did let quite a bit of dust in. It wasn't a huge issue as we slept in the center room but next time I'll seal these up.

It is HUGE though so you'll need to camp somewhere with lots of space. Which should be obvious but most tents that say they can hold 10 people would really only work for 5 or 6 - this one can *comfortably* sleep 8 adults. The center portion is somewhat free-standing but you do need to peg the side rooms and the front vestibule out or they will not stand up. There are lots of pockets to put things in inside the tent and there is one hook in the center to hang a light.More detail ...

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Mega Mat Wide Long Sleeping Pad (Earth)

Handy but hard to roll4

My husband and I bought the double size of this mattress. It is very comfortable and doesn't take up a ton of space in the tent like thicker air mattresses. It seems durable. It self-inflates well but rolling it and getting it back into the stuff sack sure is a hassle. It takes two people and a lot of effort. I think this is pretty standard with self-inflating mattresses but still probably not a good choice for the solo traveler. More detail ...

Wenzel Sycamore 18- by 10-Foot Seven-Person Three-Room Family Dome Tent

"Condo" Tent5

I spent the last 15 years backpacking and looking down my nose at car campers. THEN I had two kids 18 months and 4 1/2. I now appreciate the TRUE value of having seperate rooms (still waiting for tent-sound proofing technology) and the ability to stand up and change. If you are car-camping with kids THIS is the tent!!!!
